Hanging With the Baseline Cowboys

Who Are the Baseline Cowboys?

For the past couple of weeks when I drive down the road I have noticed a group of people hanging out in a fairly busy street on their front lawn drinking beer. They have a sign propped up on the meridian that says join our Facebook group or something. That kind of hit my funny bone. It was a novel way to build traffic to a page and it seemed their only objective was just to build one…or so my mind thought.

I soon found out from my daughter and then from the guys themselves that they were attracting a lot of attention. They were 5 roommates who came together for cheap rent. They were all connected to each other through each other. They all work in the restaurant industry and they all like to drink beer and have fun.

It all began one Wednesday afternoon when they were all off work hanging out on the front stoop drinking beer wearing cowboy hats. They live on a fairly busy street.

For some reason this mundane activity caught the attention of those driving by and the neighbours on the street. They started getting honked at. In response they started making signs to put up with funny innuendos on them.

They started getting noticed and people would drop by. Their neighbours lent them extra chairs. Someone gave them a couch. A local journalist did a story. An established blogger wrote a blog post. Someone named them the Baseline Cowboys and then everybody did. The radio stations started talking about them. They started a Facebook page where people can keep up with their shenanigans. They started getting recognized in public places like buses and huge Ottawa music festivals. It is growing and they are growing because of it. It seems to be something viral.

What Would You Do With Your 15 Minutes of Fame?

They had no name no plan and no goal. They are becoming public figures without doing anything outstanding besides being friendly, drinking beer and having fun. They are getting as much a kick out of it as their fans are. They have decided that with all this attention they should do something good with it. They feel a certain responsibility. In like fashion they will let the public who created them lead the way as to what exactly that will be. First off in celebration of their 500th liker on Facebook, a fundraiser bottle drive is being planned for a local community charity that would be decided by the fans. The chosen charity will be announced by one of The Baseline Cowboys with Sandra of Kiss fm July27th.

What is exceptional about this story  is that once these boys realized they have some sort of power or authority to influence from all the attention is that they acknowledged that they have some sort of responsibility to it. They are aged 19-23 and could have just continued along their merry ways drinking and waving from their front lawn but they are standing up to the plate and making a plan to do good as things unfold. I know I will be watching and even dropping by the odd Wednesday during the hot days of summer.

Visit With The Cowboys cowboys 2 225x300 Hanging With the Baseline Cowboys

If you are in Ottawa on a Wednesday be sure to drop by the Baseline Cowboys from 1:30-6:30 (between Merivale and Woodroffe). If you don’t you can connect with them on Facebook and start your own front lawn party in your neighbourhood.  Perhaps we can bring back some sanity to this world. What would you do?

Thanks for reading.

Next week maybe I will get my video up for you to meet the boys.

Great example of moving offline exposure to online!  Well crafted Rebecca.  It’s so cool that they’re going to be doing a fundraiser!  Will you be there?  Make sure that they get their Google Places claimed if you haven’t already!
