This is my first post just to get started. Lesson #1 so to speak…just get started. For me blogging is the last big frontier in this online world of social media marketing. I have studied and learned and worked on most of the main platforms like Digg, Linkedin, Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Hubpages, Squidoo but have shied away from the blogosphere because of the technical side of it. The Big Blog is looming over me. I will conquer it! So here goes in spite of not knowing 100% exactly what I want to focus on when I speak about social media marketing for business and helping people grow themselves and their businesses. I have the general area but know it will transform as I grow into it.
As you may know, the skeleton of this blog has been set up as by The Free Blog Factory. I will eventually get it more suited to what it is becoming but the content must begin. I wanted to write a little about the guys at Social Media Altitude and my experience with them. (from the social networks and from training with them) I am sure I will cover them in many posts to come as I continue to watch and learn from them. I want you to know up front that I think they are great. I am continually impressed with the quality of work they do and with how dedicated they are to growing themselves into being the best of themselves. They are very generous with passing it on to others.
I was on Twitter the other day with Chris Schmitt who mentioned a book called Rework. Chris lives in my town and works in the geek world as well as being a community builder. I had the opportunity to meet him a few times at different events. (For those who like to use Twitter, you may want to talk to him about the widget he is working on) I pay attention to what he is doing and what he has to say so of course I had to check this book out he was reading and ask him about it. I tracked some things down about 37signals: the company started by the author of Rework, and what they are doing is pretty nice. I will be picking up a copy of Rework
this week as well.
When I watched this video below,I found it described a lot of the attitudes (“secret weapons”) that I saw the Social Media Altitude team displaying. It goes into detail why transparency and open sourcing are the best way to be doing business. Teaching and sharing what, why, and how you do things that are specific to your field, passion, or expertise, to let others in on it, is the easiest way to gain trust and respect. Fried refers to celebrity chefs as he is a cooking fan. He watches a lot of TV cooking shows. He tells a story of a shopping expedition and points out that his purchases were not based on large brands but rather on trust he had for those who had taught him things like great cooking. The books and hardware he purchased were all linked to one of these mentors.(point to remember)
I was talking with Gabe Strom (of Social Media Altitude) the other day about one of the things that stuck out for me when I met him a year or so ago. I had seen one of his videos explaining a Twitter experiment he did from behind the scenes. He kept pointing out little helpful details that were absent in one done by another person who had also done the experiment. Of the two videos, I shared his around and used it as a reference to duplicate the experiment. In most of the interactions I have had with him or watched him do, he is always adding little key bits of detail that are extremely helpful. It costs him nothing and it doesn’t take anything away from him. It anchored greater respect and trust in him from me. As a result I have sent him referrals and been a customer.
Jason Fried says not to worry about the competition. Do as the celebrity chefs are doing. Out teach the competition. Start sharing. Share from an insiders perspective as a teacher. It is a different way of marketing your company. Personal branding at a different level. Social Media Altitude seems to be doing just that. It gives a more multilayer source of information that people can relate to and actually grow and improve upon. I am pointing this out as one “secret weapon” to use as I have noticed how it works on me. Watch the video, Jason speaks to it much better.
For any of you interested in internet marketing who have yet to participate in the Social Media Altitude Cash Map program; Chris Record, the newest member of the Social Media Altitude group does an amazing course. He too surpasses the bar by sharing simple concrete money making strategies for setting up effective affiliate marketing sites. There are so many programs that don’t deliver beyond the huge fanfare of pitch. Many have priced themselves right out of the market and offer no great value. The Social Media Altitude course covers affiliate marketing, Adsense training, and SEO all with the goal of generating a passive stream of income. Chris gives us insiders’ information from his years of online success. They are offering the recorded version of the course still with the discount and bonuses. You can find out more here => Affiliate Marketing, Adsense and SEO Cash Map
Right now, Social Media Altitude is offering the product at a $600 discount for anyone who uses the coupon code “Recording” at the check out and it comes with a 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed offer. Basically, if you invest in the course, and decide it just wasn’t for you, they’ll refund your money. If you connect with these guys on Facebook they also offer FREE trainings periodically of tools and strategies that they have had success with.
When you are building your brand think about what Jason Fried says. Watch what people are doing around you. Pay attention to what works. Keep sharing. Don’t worry about your competition. Learn from them and share information to develop a group of faithful listeners, customers and engaged fans. Help people out. Write your own book. share your story and your expertise. I would suggest that some of the secret weapons of online business or of using social media lay very close to ancient traditions of trades and apprenticeship. So get going! Learn apply and share.
Please tell me what you think about the video and how you may use some of what he talks about. I am already a big fan of Zappos and will be reading Jason Fried’s new book.
