Hey, I’m so excited about this, I left this site and went and set up my friend connect. Also added a cool poll. Thanks for the great insight. You need to know about Google whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em.

yes you do…and I think you will be happy with the Google Me if it is at all like what Chris Lang is predicting. I highly recommend following him on buzz.

I love Google and all the changes that they have been doing in the last little while. The Google Phone was pretty impressive to me. I’m looking forward to this one it will give Google accounts users and webmasters more options and tools to choose from.

    Thank you for writing this.

You either love google or you hate them…LOL. They are still trying to make money outside of advertising and haven’t done it yet. They give away a ton of great stuff, so I’m not complaining. I think I’m on Friend Connect.

If you want to be so kind to follow me on Twitter, I’m at @mikepedersen.

    Regards,
    Mike

If you are on friend connect then you want to consider having the widget on your blog…that way you can contact people directly. google has installed over 50 million of them across the web.

As with all things there is a time and a place for everything. THe example you posted would be Google Friends or Google Buzz etc. Personally I would not put any widget or tracker on my website if it did not demonstrate authority. In other words if you only have 3 Google friend connects, you have just killed off any idea of social proof to visitors of your website, so there are certainly instances that you would not want to display it to the whole world. Alexa rankings would be the same. Yes a savvy visitor can go and search Alexa to find out your site rank, but if it ranks in the multiple millions, there is no reason why anyone would want to broadcast it to the world.

Also, Google is not the only place in the world. If you have good organic results but most of your traffic comes in from social media sites like LinkedIn or Twitter or Facebook, what Google thinks about you becomes completely irrelevant. Just some additional considerations.

Thanks for the blog post, it did give me some insight.

Firstly I think that you have to start somewhere so that if you never put up the widget you will never have the opportunity of gaining more social proof. From what I have learned is that all the google tools are being tied together and that Google Me will be where all your interests from across the web will be gathered for you to control as you wish.
The Friend connect is the same as the friend on Youtube and this is what will be tied directly into your gmail account. So if you establish yourself with good content and people decide to join your site as it is pertinent to something they are interested in, you can hold the discussion on buzz in a very intentional and intense way…and Buzz is connected to your gmail inbox.
The traffic can come from other places and some are presently being ranked by Google but some are not. It is in you keeping the traffic by offering what they want. Social traffic is great traffic to attract and keep.
Using google tools will be something Google pays attention to. Sure there are other places than Google but at the moment, Google is the biggest in the room at the moment.
As far as Alexa is concerned, I have spent the odd moment there but I have come across some good sites that have yet to establish themselves but have great content. If it becomes a competition of bragging rights as it does for some probably for the game of it then these numbers are important.
I suggest paying attention to google so that you are informed about what is coming down the line long term…

    Hi Rebecca,
Wow, this is an interesting tip and good video as well. I had no idea that Google’s server resources so vastly outnumber those of FB, MS etc. but it sure makes sense to be so. It’ll be fun seeing what is coming down the pike. Thanks for the heads up!

Only a few days ago, at JValert in Denver, I listened to similar advice from Simon Leung former Google employee. My biggest frustration is the lack of any decent customer support at Google. I have tried several times to get the Google Friend Connect widget on my blog; it worked until I moved my hosting. Now I get only a blank box. I have tried repeatedly to set everything up again from “scratch” with no good results. OK, got that out. But bottom line, yeah, make good use of the Google apps.
