Using Online Radio Advertising For Results

by Rebecca Happy on August 7, 2010

Why Market Research for Your Niche Market?

The objective of internet marketing is to drive traffic and convert it into long term buying customers. For the past couple of posts I have been talking about niche marketing and market research using keywords. The entire reason for doing this kind of market research and keyword use is to find out about a market niche and its competition and strength to drive traffic to my sites where I can provide the best niche specific content in hopes they purchase services or products from me. In other words, what you need to drive traffic is to:

  • understand the market
  • find out where they are
  • provide solutions for niche market
  • raise visibility and awareness of you in that niche market
  • convert into sales

Results Based Advertising For Your Niche

One way of driving traffic online is through results based advertising using paid services like PPC, Facebook ads, Google Adsense or even radio advertising. Radio advertising works and has for decades as does television advertising. However, with the tremendous growth of the internet and the onset of web 2.0 and social media, traditional media is not necessarily the best nor the most cost effective use of advertising dollars today. Those who want cheap advertising are adding online advertising into their marketing mix.

Cheap Radio Advertising?!

Is there such a thing as cheap radio advertising? If you have been online for a while you may have heart of blogtalk radio or podcasting. These are internet based radio. There is a huge market of niche specific shows growing every day. Some of these internet radio stations are offering cheap advertising packages and others very expensive. This is where you want to know whether your niche market is listening? We know that radio advertising works. Would the results from this type of advertising be more aligned to what you are looking for than say other types of online advertising?

Motivated Buyers Make Purchases

online shopping

Most people listen to online radio out of the comfort of their home the way they traditionally listened to radio or watched TV. This has them in a relaxed state. Many of these listeners are business builders with decision making powers. If you are looking to try out online radio advertising you may want to see what Motivational Radio has to offer. Their Gold membership offers 30 second ads for less than a dollar each. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better station or a better deal online today. They have recently seen massive growth and are fast approaching one million daily listeners. Most of these are business oriented and very motivated to be successful.

Rebecca, I have to admit that had not given it much thought until I read your post. The rate certainly should not stop anyone from trying. My hesitation is the fact that I have not a clue how to design a good radio ad. I would have to study it some more. Do you know a good place to get some tips on how to build a radio ad?

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

Actually I don’t. I would look to copywriters blogs for that and then listen carefully to radio ads that catch your attention. Same concepts…simple, language geared to your audience and congruent with all your other tactics. Best to have a direct response call to action. Provide solutions to their problems. Keep it short and sweet.

Great info Rebecca. I hadn’t thought of online radio in terms of advertising and it is a great idea. I’ve been using ‘Market Samurai’ to do my keyword research and have found it to be a very useful tool. In addition to keyword research and seo competition, it also allows you to find content based on your keywords, create your own content and publish it to your blog.

Yes…I am loving the tool myself. There are few things that are bothersome but in terms or what it can do for you, it is certainly a very practical purchase.
you can get a free advertisers account by checking it out here if you want…there is an excellent toolbar available for you as well. http://rebeccahappy.com/AMRadio. I am very excited to be a part of their growth.

Great post. I had never really thought of advertising on radio, though I HAVE been interviewed on radio and consider that a form of promotion/advertising. I will definitely look into what you suggest.

    Hey there Rebecca,

You created a very interesting post here. I never thought of doing online Radio ads until I started listening to Pandora all the time then it kind of dawned on me like “Oh, I could put my ad there too!” Gotta love the Internet man, no other form of advertising could do that for you these days…

    Hi Rebecca,

Everything old is new again! I love how everything comes back into vogue with a new spin! Very interesting concept. How do you figure out what niches this radio station reaches?

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

I would love to know what you think about it…the bronze level is free and you can get paid for referring advertisers. I suggest downloading the toolbar…you will find it amazing. (I think there are 5in1)

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

Are you doing ads on Pandora? Would love to hear what it has done for you.

We hit 720K last night…think about that! What is great about the internet is the syndication of things so for sure speed and mass and niche are hugely impacted. The Gold members account gives you 40 runs a month on 30 sec ads for $39…. Many of the Gold members are going for their own half hour weekly show. This choice has brought their message to a substantially larger audience and really boosted their numbers. The internet world never ceases to amaze me.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

That is good to know. who did you use to make the ad? @KarinBoode was looking for some resources on this.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

This link will give you all the details http://rebeccahappy.com/AMRadio. A relationship show may be a great way for you to go. The Gold level gives you the best option for renting the studio. For $100/month you get your own weekly 30 min show. Some are using their 30 sec ads to promote that throughout the week.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

The new technologies are just enhancing our old habits and needs. Online radio still serves the need. The device has changed. The internet has made it accessible for anyone to broadcast themselves so has broadened the spectrum of information and content that can be distributed. For me this is what makes it so exciting.
From a marketers perspective, having a very targeted niche for very low cost can only be beneficial. From a users perspective it is a dream come true.

  • Gary Young

Rebecca, This s a strange new world for me. I only need 2-4 sales per year and my target is CEOs who either are sourcing in china now or want to. That is pretty niche. What internet radio would you recommend?

    Fellow TSA member Gary Young

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

Well Gary that is a little vague for me to even speculate….what kind of CEOs do you want and what are their behaviours etc..I previously wrote 3 entries on lessons from the 3 part marketing pro’s new book. Defining your ideal customer with complex detail will provide you the indicators of where and how to find them. My question to you would be…what kind of stations do they listen to if they do at all?

I would also suggest to you to spend a lot of time exploring linkedin. 45% of the members are decision makers of the business. That is almost 1 in 2. It was initially founded by fortune 500 executives. I would suggest optimizing your profile and strategically joining groups or starting your own groups and entering discussions in related fields where you can add value to the conversation. You can also participate in the Q&A sessions.

Rebecca, thank you so much for the education and helping me raise the bar on my game. I had not considered radio/podcasting previously as a form of advertising. A podcast would allow you to convey a lot more and would be more portable than any written format.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Rebecca,

I have to say thanks very much for this post. I’ve given a lot of thought, or so it seemed, to advertising and traffic recently. I can honestly say that radio didn’t enter my head once. And I’ve no idea why!

    Thanks again, it’s much appreciated.

Rebecca, Before investing in online radio advertising, it is important to do some research and find out how many listeners are tuning into that station. Also, it is not enough to place an ad once. The ad needs to be repetitive so that people become famililar with your name, your brand, your product. Thanks for offering another way to increase traffic and business.

  • Anonymous

Hi Rebecca I have not considered radio advertising before as I don’t often listen to the radio myself but if my niche market is listening I should tune in as well. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

you can listen here and even join the forum http://motivational-radio.com or if you sign into the free advertisers account you can get a really cool toolbar where you can program to listen to any radio station and listen directly from your browser. http://rebeccahappy.com/AMRadio.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

Totally important points Erica. I am the program manager of Motivational Radio. WE tipped one million listeners in last Wednesdays show and actually went to 1,100,000. The Gold membership gives you 40 ads each month for 39$. The best deal in terms of building brand familiarity comes from renting the studio and hosting your own 30 min weekly show. http://motivational-radio1.com has some great deals to consider.
Nothing you do online will bring much impact without repetitive points of contact. People need to become familiar in order to get to know you or your business.

Internet stations have different ways of being run – thus, the different prices those stations charge for advertising. Some charge $100 a month (which may be a financial burden, but effective for high-caliber companies) while others charge $5-$10 a month (budget-friendly for the small business, but high-caliber companies will think they won’t get their money’s worth).

I understand how all stations will need to maintain their equipment or even replace it, but some advertisers don’t want to pay a high price to market themselves. In my area, there are only four notable online stations, including mine. I have talked to those owners and we agree on one thing: we want to offer budget-friendly pricing for our advertisers.

It’s hard running everything online (for my part) when they were based off of two former FM stations, plus I don’t want to be called a jerk if I charged $100 a month, even for unlimited airplay of their ads.

      Again, it’s a management thing…..

  • Debbie

Hey Rebecca! Thanks for the great advice here. I listen to a small Christian radio station that’s not actually online, but when I do listen to the radio I’m always hearing ads for different small businesses and network marketing companies. From what I understand, they draw a big following. This cleared up some of the confusion on radio advertising. Thanks.

    Rebecca,

We have not yet looked into online radio as a medium for getting our message out. So thanks for sharing your knowledge on the subject… it looks as though it`s a fairly large market and may be something we`ll look into in the future.

    Thanks,
    Pat and Lorna Shanks

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Leonard/100001584254496 Jake Leonard

Pat & Lorna…..it isn’t easy trying to get advertising for online radio – trust me. I was trying for several months before the station launched until I had enough to start off. Now a lot of them have not contacted me back. Some advertisers can be backstabbers and not pay at all. Not me – I usually arrange a payment plan if they can’t pay right away. (That usually isn’t the case, considering I charge $55 a year for unlimited ad airplay and a business logo with link to your website, plus the logo is also on rotation on two of our three streaming servers as station sponsors (yes, I also consider advertisers sponsors as well)

Trust me – it isn’t always easy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Leonard/100001584254496 Jake Leonard

Great post! I happen to be the GM/owner of an Internet radio station, but am struggling to get advertisers – the ones I have recently paid for one month and have not notified me further regarding renewal. I would appreciate any help I could get in regards to advertisers.
