Online Marketing Strategy Using Video

Conversation Marketing

When I signed up for Peggy McColl’s book launch the other day,  for her new book “Viral Explosions”, I noticed her sales page has a promotional video by April Cline Video. I recently connected with April Cline on Twitter and we decided to do an interview. I am going to share with you a little about April and her 3 top tips for using video as part of your online marketing strategy.

Internet Marketing History

April Cline has been a serial entrepreneur for over twenty years.  It wasn’t until 2005, however, that she actually began to call herself an entrepreneur. To bring a bit of web history here I will sketch in some of what she was doing. Back in 1999 April remembers saying she did not trust doing any of her purchasing online– look how far we’ve come, she said. Since that time she’s done quite a bit of marketing and promoting for others but after a family tragedy in 2000, she dropped everything and started focusing on personal creative projects. April went online in 2001 selling homemade candles and perfume. Having a webpage in order to sell things on the internet was all the rage. The cost for doing this was $179 for a domain name and $99/mo for hosting.(look how far we’ve come)

As you must know entrepreneurs are often fanatic learners. They are creative, always open to new ideas and growing themselves. April Cline is no exception. She became a trained life coach (focusing on business coaching) and added that to her toolbox. Her strength and passion is promoting/marketing others and making them look good. While promoting a social media event in the summer of 2009, April started playing around with video. The video was such a great calling card that she has made that the vehicle of her business today.

Video Sales Pages

April Cline says video is crucial to your website. You should be using video on every page that has a call to action. She goes so far to say that if you are not using video today in your online marketing strategy you have wasted your money. People are busy and they have already decided to come to your page to check you out and make a decision, so get to the point and don’t waste time. The video can contain the sales copy and get the message across in a succinct way. The trend is going away from written sales copy and using a sales video only. I suggest you seriously consider this trend.

3 Top Tips For Using Video inYour Marketing Mix

  1. Keep the video to a short 45s- 2min max
  2. Have a clear compelling call to action (on every page where you want to move people)
  3. Tell a story. What message are you conveying to your ideal client? Who are you speaking with?

Even if you are using a simple webcam, think of these videos as a moving business card. They could be worth thousands to you. It is your chance to shine and show yourself as approachable and polished. People want the polish to know that you are a premiere person who will provide the product or service that will really deliver…lifestyle, knowledge, financial etc. Your landing page needs to show that you are serious, professional and you know what you are doing.

April Cline Video provides all this for those who want to uses their time resources elsewhere in their business. She spends hours making the video absolutely perfect. She makes her customers look good and pays a lot of attention to the details. She ensures her clients love how they come across as she knows that this moving calling card could land them contracts worth thousands.  She does such a great job of it that essentially all of her customers are coming through referrals.

Whether you make your own video or outsource it to someone like April Cline Video, I suggest that you consider what I have shared with you today when you go to set up your next sales page…..start marketing with video!

Thanks Rebecca. That is great advice. I will certainly take that into consideration for my upcoming projects.

I noticed this – just from some of the other leaders out there making sales pages… and I thought to myself – if they're doing it – it must be the best thing to do.

Excited to implement the same things to my future publications! Thanks for confirming this with me!

April uses animoto…it is fairly inexpensive and does an amazing job.

yeah… I've heard of animoto.. I just use keynote on my mac. That's how I've been doing a few of my videos in the past.

We've come a long way, baby. We best not sit on the sidelines or we will be lost in the hum of tomorrow's technology. The momentum is increasing exponentially with no slowdown visible on the horizon. The time is here now for all to become fanatic learners. No fun being left behind!

    Hi Rebecca,
You are so right about video marketing…it IS the hot new trend and will not be going away anytime soon. Using video to attract people to you and your business is an essential ingredient in any serious entrepreneur's recipe book of success.

For someone like Peggy McColl, outsourcing her video production. For most beginning marketers, however, creating your own is a better (and more affordable) route. More and more people are responding to the casual, home made feeling of self-created videos and are less impressed with high dollar productions. These can seem “slick” or “hyped up.”

    Thanks for a great post!

Being a bootstrapper myself I do tend to go the do it your self route Mary Lou but I do think depending on how big your vision and budget is, one may make decisions to hire people to do some of the tasks that may not be our strengths (or live without).

I have some some great do-it yourself videos and some crappy ones (made a few myself). There are two trains of thought here…just putting yourself out there is good (personal development and all) and if you can't follow-up with good quality then don't bother.

What I liked about April was that she is using the video production as the gateway really to do business consulting. There are so many of us doing a one woman show that there are many basic areas that we are not covering. I guess that is the perpetual growth of life.

It is really incredible how cheap some of these tools have become and easy to use for all us do-it yourselfers. We don't even need a photo developer these days.
    Thanks for dropping by.

The thing with using web 2.0 and social media is that there is always something new to learn. It is still so new and things are changing very rapidly. You have to be careful not to get lost in it.
