Good post.... and some great comments followed.  Those free offers are a strategy many offline businesses use as well...think free samples.  With blogs, as you pointed out so well, information of value is given freely and the higher the value, the more repeat visits, the more subscribers, etc.  That was a great example of moving the free line!
