What Is A BHAG?

BHAG is an acronym for Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Who would have guessed? These words strung together make me laugh every time as I get funny images flowing through my brain. It was first coined by American college professors Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in 1992 and written about in their book Built to Last. My friend, TV host Philippe Matthews sent me a video of an interview he conducted with international bestselling author, Mark Victor Hansen. Whenever I hear something new I always do a Google search on it to find out more and so I found out about BHAGs…the big hairy ones.

The Power of Words from Great Mentors

In my last post I spoke about the power of words and focused on taking responsibility for what you speak and how you use your voice. Words have the power to speak life as well as the power to kill. In Philippe Matthews’ story, he was lucky enough to have found a mentor who spoke words of life to him and over him. He was also lucky enough to have heard them and to action them into his life. Mark Victor Hansen was that mentor and I am thrilled to share with you a glimpse of Philippe Matthew’s BHAG.

Who Is Philippe Matthews?

Philippe Matthews is an American who came from what one would call a tough childhood. You can read more by Googling “About Philippe Matthews”. From a very young age he and his sister had to fend for themselves which for many would have left them stuck in a place of victim-hood and desperation for the rest of their lives. But for some stroke of luck growing up, Philippe came across teachings from leaders such as Zig Ziglar, Les Brown, Brian Tracy, Dr.Denis Waitley. They saved his life. Phillipe says that listening to the tape “See You at The Top” changed him. See You at the Top. Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) It gave him “hope courage and a plan and a reason to wake up every day and get it right another day.” This statement again demonstrates the power of words on those around us.

Mark Victor Hansen Shares His BHAGs with Philippe Matthews

Philippe recorded this video at the Chicago book fair when he found Mark Victor Hansen going through the steps to accomplish his BHAG of selling one BILLION books by the year 2020. This is where I first heard the term Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Hansen’s goal for the Chicken Soup Books certainly fits the description. Already in 2004 they had sold 100 Million.

Mark Victor Hansen has many of these BHAGs. He says that they are important to have a BHAG as it forces you to grow and others to play. If you listen to the men who coined the term they say that a BHAG has to have 3 ingredients.

  • Great passion including your values
  • What you can be best at in the world
  • What best drives your economic engine

1.       To illustrate this for the case of the Chicken Soup books the great passion can be found in the vision that Mark Victor Hansen states in the video which is “to change the whole world one story at a time”

2.       What they are best at would be compiling people’s anecdotal stories

3.       What drives the economic engine is the single focused story within different sub niches.

BHAGs Get You Thinking

I personally think it is phenomenal to watch and to listen to some of what this man’s visions are and how he has helped so many people. One big key I noticed when watching this video is at the very beginning when Hansen gives accolades to Philippe for taking action on the words given by him 2 years prior. What I hear, is under the bravo is also pride in knowing that his words had impact. Mark Victor Hansen puts these messages out to many through books, seminars, videos and face to face coaching but I am sure that the ratio is small for those who take such earnest action as did Philippe. Mark Victor Hansen hailed him as the Oprah of Internet. Those are big words and that is on Big Hairy Audacious Goal to meet but without it, I would not have met Philippe this year and he would not be bringing the great nuggets of gold from some of the world’s greatest change agents such as Mark victor Hansen to us through his TV, radio and blog media today.

So tell me. Did this get you thinking? What is your BHAG? Dare you share it with us in the comments below or is it still gestating? Thanks for dropping by.

Really amusing post as it creates huge pictures in ones mind. Goal setting is great but a big hairy one is even better :)

After talking to Philippe I was glad to see the outlook that he has on things. Listening to Mark Victor Hansen here was great. I like his idea about not only giving once but to give as you get blessed. This is a very good concept!

I just attended a local conference for Kissimmee Main Street program and was introduced to BHAGs. Audacious! Love it. We brainstormed as a group and are looking to some BHAGs being acheived.

Still gestating, must be an elephant as it has been gestating for sooo very long. One of my goals is to have my two daughters and myself create a formidable on-line presence thereby tightening our bonds together, and helping our clients get what they want in the process.

It was interesting. But I must admit my BHAGs are a little too personal to post. At least for now. Maybe that is a problem. If you cannot tell the world about your dreams, how can the world ever help to make them come true???? Something I will be thinking about.

Wonderful post! I had heard that term before and it is pretty funny … I never heard of Phillippe Matthews – learn something new every day! My goal is to change the mindsets and perceptions of childbirth into positive ones so expectant moms are the change setters, not the medical community and to go to Tuscany, Italy :-) . Thank you!

It really does get you thinking and why not think big? Every time I listen to Mark Victor Hansen talk about his it blows me away and gets me happy for him.

    Rebecca,

I love this post! I’m a big dreamer, so I can totally relate to this. I am one of the few that have a truly open mind to any and everything available, and sure I’ve made my mistakes and wasted a lot of money, but if you don’t take risk, you’ll never know.

    Regards,
    Mike

From what I understand goals have to be big, hairy and audacious or they won’t work. They have to scare you a little and have to stretch you. I like the acronym he has used for it. I have a goal to write a book but am everyday searching for a way to grow into what I want to say. It will come. The title glares at me and I know what I have to say will help a lot of people. Thanks so much for sharing this.

    Hi Rebecca,

I, too, love the term BHAG! My big takeaway this week is that I need to be more diligent in my dreams being BHAG and that I need to write them down and visit them often. I loved the 3 components of BHAG and I will be mulling this over perhaps to come back and share with you later. Thanks for inspiring me.

I love the BHAG, I have some friends that call it ahead to Dead. If you think about it like that you are working your life back from your last seconds and what does it look like. Then you just have to jump into the details of how to travel from here to there.

I’m with Nicole Rushin on wanting to write a book, and it will happen. In high school I used to be able to write all kinds of short stories, poetry, and tried my best to get published in magazines, etc. It never happened then, but it was fun. However, my Senior year in high school I took a creative writing course, it no longer became about writing a story for me, but writing specific content for someone else. Ever since then I’ve never been able to generate consistent content on regular basis. It took something out of me. It didn’t help that the teacher didn’t like my genre of choice Horror.

I’ve got a few others just not ready to share.

Good that you can pinpoint that Jeremiah…now you need to re-write that story that is probably no longer serving you…if you had the flow before, it still exists within you so you just need to rekindle it and lay that teacher to rest.

totally looking forward to hearing it Debbie…If you look at Hansen talk about his you can see his delight…so much fun.

Hi Rebecca, I love Mark Victor Hanson! Thanks so much, just finalized my Big Hairy Audacious Goal. I want to feed 1 million meals to hungry children. I’ve entered a contest at the Best Idea for Humanity to help me achieve my goal. (P.S. we’re participant #137)

It makes me feel so alive to have such a BHAG! Love it!

I have to many BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS however to narrow them down off the top of my head I’d like to change the world one fan at a time and meet each and every one of them face to face! Heal the world one song at a time and have to financial resources to take as much time needed to sing for the sick who cannot leave where they are to come to a concert and provide the best medical treatment to those who cannot afford to have it while offering them moments away from their circumstances. I’d like To feed the world one story at a time. I’d like to be provide scholarships to innercity teens who may not be able to go to college or university but have the smarts to change their circumstances given the opportunity. I’d like to have THE JULLY BLACK SHOW internationally broadcasted. I’d like to write my Mothers Memoirs and have he followed up with my own memoir. I’d like to tour the WORLD in 2011 and beyond. I want my music heard on EVERY radio station around the world. I’d like to provide for my family in ways they could only dream of since my mother raised 9 kids as a single parent me being the youngest, I want to make my family even happier but being able to bring us together more often. I’d like to have a family… ONE DAY… I’d like to be able to accept change faster then I have been able to… Of course there are luxuries but I won’t get into those here ; )

  • http://www.twitter.com/rebeccahappy rebeccahappy

  • Inquiries Jullyblack

OH… MY BIGGEST HAIRIEST AUDACIOUS GOAL is to become an internationally known, loved and accepted Pop star who has sold more then 200 million records world wide and can take over the reign of the humanitarianism that Michael Jackson left behind. He is in the Guiness Book of records for being the biggest giver to the apparently and he could do that first of all because of the heart he was made with and HIS UBBER SUCCESS!
